Cuba gets a makeover
Aye, the revolution is finally over. Seems their new president Castro has decided the old ways are in need of a spice of capitalism thrown into the economy. My old man and me have had this debate about communism versus capitalism ever since I was a teenager, and he always uses his trump card, the Soviet Union might have fallen and China gone capitalist in one party state, but at least Castro and the Cuban people stayed true to the revolution.
Yeah whatever, now everybody’s best pal Raul has decided its OK to earn as much money as you like, that Cubans can have flash tellies and mobile phones, he’s even letting them own their own house, geez Maggie Thatcher would be so proud of him.
Back in the 70’s my dad went there coz he was a member of the Scottish Communist party, still is I think, and he’s never let me forget it he had such a great time touring the factories and seeing how the workers were so happy living in a true socialist state. He never understood why so many Cubans in Miami were always having a go at his hero Castro.
Now I suppose I’m gonna have to book a holiday to Cuba before capitalism destroys the old ways completely coz I bet as soon as the Miami lot get their money back into Cuba you can kiss goodbye to anything from the revolution days. It’ll be big new hotels, American style shopping malls, loads of bling bling and all that shite.
