Changing sidebar width on my wordpress theme

21 April, 2008 (09:01) | wordpress | By: admin

Firebug and FirefoxEh, check out my sidebars, you wouldn’t know it but they are now wider than the original sidebars on this theme. I like the theme, but the sidebars were too narrow, and now they’re wider so I can fit in the wider widget, and it was all my own work, are you impressed?

Wordpress themes are a bit complex for those of us who haven’t done this stuff before, oh thanks to the few of you who’ve been kind enough to offer your help, but I’m having some fun working it out for myself, although if you’re written up and guides to working with wordpress you think I might be interested in please give me you’re website url.

So, you might be asking how did I make the sidebars wider? Well, I discovered a really cool plugin for Firefox called firebug that helps you work out what to change in your stylesheet. All I had to do was play with a few of the styles then upload the changes to my blog and hey presto.

I was lucky this theme doesn’t have any background images so all I had to was make the main post area smaller and increase the width of the sidebars by the same amount. Took me five minutes to do the whole thing.

Might even have to look into this theming thing a bit more maybe make a few more changes.

I do wish I was better with the themes… I have a great idea, but have problems getting the css just right. I like your sidebars, though!

Hi Matt,
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I think you did a good job on your sidebars and it shows up well in IE usually what looks good in FF breaks in IE and it fills my screen without making me have to scroll over. Have a good one.
